A Review Of Premature Ejaculation (PE)

Author: N Young

Among a number of problems related with the sexual health of many men we find Premature Ejaculation as the most common sexual problem occurring to a great number of males around the world. This condition is most often described as being an inability to delay ejaculation up to the point when it is mutually desirable for both partners. The definition of when ejaculation is premature can be very subjective. While some men have trouble controlling their orgasm upon entry into their partners, others consider 5-10 minutes of copulation too little time. From this we can conclude that how long a man is able to last is not the important factor in diagnosing premature ejaculation, but the crucial issue is if a man is satisfied with the length of coitus.

Today, most sex therapists understand premature ejaculation as occurring when a lack of ejaculatory control interferes with sexual or emotional well-being in one or both partners. And it is known that about thirty percent of men suffer from premature ejaculation on a consistent basis. Most men have experienced this problem at some time in their sexual life. Premature ejaculation was once thought to be caused by drugs or certain infections such as urethritis, but popular wisdom suggests it is more psychological in nature. The exact cause of the condition, however, still remains much of a mystery.

Premature ejaculation often occurs during the first experiences with sex, and in this case is most commonly attributed to anxiety. The majority of men gradually learn to control their orgasm, and have no lasting effect. Some men will develop a longer-term anxiety toward sex, which can cause a prolonged experience with premature ejaculation.

Sexual behavior is also an important factor in determining the appearance of PE in males. The longer the period since last ejaculating, the quicker young men typically reach orgasm. Younger men tend to ejaculate more quickly than older men, as experience seems to be associated with ejaculatory control.

The statistics of premature ejaculation condition are as follows:

Frequency: In the US the prevalence rate of PE in American males is estimated to range from 30-70%.

Internationally: Estimates for European countries and India mirror the prevalence in the United States.

The prevalence in other parts of Asia, Africa, Australia, and elsewhere is unknown.

Mortality/Morbidity: No known direct morbidity or mortality results from premature ejaculation.

Race: No reproducible data exist on major differences between racial groups with respect to the incidence or prevalence of PE.

Sex: PE is a condition that only affects males.

Age: Premature Ejaculation can occur at virtually any age in an adult man's life but its most common in younger men (aged 18-30), than in older males (45-60)
