How to get rid of a cold sore. There are not many remedies out there and what information there is you have to pay for it.

Fact: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of this virus and cold sores is type one which is called HSV-1.

Fact: Many people who suffer from the virus are aware in advance that a cold sore will break out - they have a tingling or burning feeling, redness, itching or pain.

Fact: Cold sore outbreaks can be influenced by menstruation, sunlight, sunburn, fever or local skin trauma.

Fact: People can transfer the virus from cold sores to other parts of the body such as the eye, skin or fingers.

The question is can we stop them?

There is no cure for the cold sore but there are many ways to prevent them from reoccurring. Here are some helpful ways you can implement into your lifestyle.

1. Use a lip moisturizer to prevent your lips from becoming dry or chapped.

2. Use asprin for your cold sore to help with the pain

3. Remember to eat a healthy diet and avoid salty or acidic foods. Foods such as potato chips and citrus fruits can further irritate cold sores.

4. Apply an over the counter anesthetic which can also mask the pain.

5. Use a sunscreen on your lips to prevent sunlight and sunburn inducing further cold sores

6. Try relaxation therapy to relieve yourself during stressful times not including burning some oils and listening to meditative music

7. Thoroughly wash your hands as you interact throughout the day

8. Avoid sharing common items such as towels, cups, cutlery

9. Avoid kissing and touching other people especially children when an outbreak occurs

10. See your local health professional in the case of a severe or re-occurring outbreak.
